About e-UARM

e-UARM stands for electronic – Universal Access Research Methods, a new and innovative medium for original, high quality research in Universal Access (UA), focussing on innovations in research methods for UA. We define Universal Access as access for anyone, anytime, anywhere and any how, a vision for the future of information technology towards which we are working. e-UARM is an electronic journal dedicated to the provision of a platform for innovative, high quality research to develop the emerging research methods which are required if the field of Universal Access (UA) is to realise its full potential. We are equally dedicated to the achievement of high standards of research, so the contributions in e-UARM will have been through a rigorous review process.

One of our key objectives is to respond quickly and effectively to the needs of the research communities dedicated to making a difference to Universal Access. So, if you have any bright ideas about what we can do to use e-UARM to promote UA, please let us know and we will respond proactively and quickly. Fast responses to potential authors is an important part of our remit, we have created a fast but thorough reviewing process to enable authors to establish high quality publications rapidly. e-UARM focuses on the need to explore and develop research methods in the field of Universal Access. Universal Access shares a common objective of universal design and access, but to achieve this goal, we will need significant input from (amongst others): computer scientists, cognitive psychologists, social scientists, AI experts.

We are providing a range of types of publication, ranging from whole issue papers of monumental significance, to normal sized reports, to brief and rapid “work in progress” papers. We welcome both empirical papers which report new studies, trials or comparisons of methodological innovations, conceptual contributions which seek to clarify the bases for UA related methods or incisive reviews of methodological issues in UA. We only publish original work, so submission to e-UARM will be taken to mean that the submitted work has not been submitted elsewhere. e-UARM is itself an exciting innovation in the development of innovative research methods in Universal Access. Let it also be a valuable means of communication with the diverse communities of researchers in our field.

CIRCUA
Collaborative International Research Centre for Universal Access

The future of universal access is likely to be based upon a complex combination of

a) culturally sensitive user centred system design
b) design for key subsets of people
c) customisation by individual preference ...

That is where the work of CIRCUA focuses.

Ray Adams and the Design for All team have just produced a new book. It is entitled "Natural computing and interactive system design", published by Pearson Publishing. It contains chapters by Ray on natural computing, Serengul Smith-Atakan and Ray on user centred system design, by Gill Whitney and Ray on universal access and by Ralph Moseley on self-adaptation and reflection
